What is link bait?
Link bait is exactly what it sounds like. Someone creates a page that is designed solely for links. There are various forms of linkbait, which you may have come across on the internet, which are considered linkbait.
Flaming
Flaming is purposefully upsetting someone who is popular or a group of people in the hopes that people will link to the post. This obviously has its pros and cons. On one hand you might cause a major stir and have people like you for being honest or because they share your point of view, but on the other hand, you could start a major flame war.
Creation by the Uncyclopedia This page is going to really upset a lot of Christians. That was the point of creating it. One person who finds this site will send it to their friend who will send it to their friend, all with the same thing being said about it, “Can you believe they did that?” What makes this a good idea is because search engines view a link as a link, whether the person put’s it up on their webpage because of how awful it is or not. So, sometimes a bit of flame can really heat up your search engine rankings.
Odd or unusual
Things that make people either wonder if something is real, how’d they do that or are just in amazement creates great link bait. We as humans are always interested in the bizarre or unusual. This is the most creative of linkbait examples because your imagination is your only limit.
Segal on the nickel? Here the creator came up with this very artistic overlay of Steven Segal over Jefferson’s face. Oddly enough it is very convincing.
Funny
This virtually speaks for itself. If something makes us smile, we naturally would want to put a smile on the face of our friends and family. So, we email it and put it on our websites to show the world how funny we thought the link is.
Girls are Evil I’m sure many guys can identify with the name of this page. Well, this genius mathematically proved this theory, and oddly enough I have to say, this girl is convinced.
Lists and other helpful pages
Lists and helpful pages have a way of being bookmarked and shared with other like-minded people. The more useful or time-saving the more links and page views the tool or list will get. Chances are you have seen this even in offline media as well.
Digglicious This website is a collection of some of our favorite social communities all on one page. Boy is that helpful. What sets this site apart is the streaming live content being shown instead of the static texts on the social sites front pages
